Wijaya Roasted Curry Powder is a Sri Lankan spice blend built around a backbone of coriander, cuminseed and fennelseed, slow-roasted to draw out a deeper, smokier character than an unroasted mix would give. It is the form of curry powder that Sri Lankan cooks reach for when they want a richer, more complex base for meat, fish and vegetable dishes, and it is the one that carries the Sinhala name බැදපු තුනපහ කුඩු — literally, roasted three-and-five powder — on the pack.
The declared ingredient list tells the story clearly: coriander at sixty per cent forms the foundation, cuminseed accounts for just over a fifth of the blend, fennelseed adds a gentle anise note at five per cent, and then mustard, cinnamon, rampe, curry leaves, chilli, garlic, fenugreek, cardamom and clove complete the composition. There is no turmeric in this formulation. The roasting step is central to what this powder is — it transforms raw green spice notes into something toasty and warm, giving the finished dish a colour and depth that raw powder does not produce.
The powder is made by Wijaya Products (Pvt) Ltd, a manufacturer established in 1989 in Podagoda, Kalutara, on Sri Lanka's southern coast. The company holds ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 22000:2018 and ISO 50001:2018 certifications alongside GMP and HACCP accreditation, reflecting production standards that have allowed it to export across more than twenty countries, including Australia, the United States, across Europe and throughout the Middle East. Ingredients are cleaned thoroughly before milling, and the milling itself is carried out under controlled hygienic conditions.
The powder is packed in laminated foil-lined pouches designed to protect the volatile aromatics of roasted spice from light, moisture and air — the same properties that make roasted blends both prized and fragile. The 50g pack carries a Vegetarian certification and a No Alcohol declaration on-pack, making the sourcing and formulation transparent for those who need it. A 250g bag is also available for households that cook with this blend regularly.
Wijaya has produced around sixty product lines since its founding, and its spice range is central to that output. The Roasted Curry Powder is one of the products that travels most widely in the diaspora community and among cooks outside Sri Lanka who want to work with a blend assembled and roasted in the country of origin rather than approximated elsewhere. A batch manufactured in 2025 carries an expiry date thirteen months from production, which is a reasonable working life for a roasted spice kept in a cool, dry cupboard.
