Harischandra Coffee is a roasted and ground coffee powder made from 100% Sri Lankan coffee beans, produced by Harischandra Mills PLC at their factory in Matara, on Sri Lanka's southern coast. It is not an instant coffee. The beans are roasted and ground to preserve their natural character, delivering a cup with earthy, aromatic qualities that Sri Lankan coffee drinkers have known since the brand introduced coffee to its range in 1958.
The sole ingredient is Sri Lankan coffee beans, and the product carries certification to SLS 258, the Sri Lanka Standards Institution's national specification for roasted and ground coffee. Harischandra Mills PLC, founded in 1943 by C. A. Harischandra and listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange, has been a fixture of the Sri Lankan grocery shelf for generations. The Matara provenance matters: the mills and the beans both come from the island.
Brewing is straightforward. The packaging suggests four teaspoons of coffee powder to 700 ml of boiling water, then allowing it to brew before pouring — a method long practised in Sri Lankan homes, where the coffee is commonly taken black with sugar, or with a measure of milk. The earthy flavour is pronounced enough that first-time drinkers may prefer to balance it with either. Once a packet is opened, keeping it sealed preserves the aroma.
Harischandra Coffee is available in a compact 20 g foil sachet — useful for travel or for trying the coffee before committing to a larger quantity — and in 100 g and 200 g foil packets suited to everyday household use. All formats are sealed in foil to protect the coffee from light and moisture in transit. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight after opening.
