A retelling of Pinocchio for young children, prepared in Sinhala by Priyangwada Perera and published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo. It belongs to a series of fairy tale books made for children in Sri Lanka, each taking a well known story and setting it down in plain, simple Sinhala.
The text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English in the book, so it suits households where a child is reading or being read to in the language, whether at home in Sri Lanka or abroad. The vocabulary is kept deliberately straightforward, which places it within reach of early readers and makes it workable as a read-aloud for children still some way from reading on their own.
The book is printed on gloss paper and illustrated in colour throughout, the pictures carrying as much of the storytelling as the words do at this age.
For parents and grandparents outside Sri Lanka who want their children to meet familiar stories in Sinhala rather than in translation back from it, titles of this kind are the practical starting point: a known tale, short sentences, bright pictures, and a child who already has some idea of where the story is going.
