These are halves of coconut shell with the coir fibre left on the outside. Each one is the shell of a coconut grown in Sri Lanka, split and cleaned out, but with the hairy golden-brown husk still attached to the dome — so the outside keeps the texture, colour and rough character of the whole nut.
The inside has been scraped clean of flesh and the rim cut level, while the fibre outside is left as it grew. That fibrous shell is what makes this version useful where the look matters as much as the vessel: it grips well in the hand, it reads as unmistakably natural on a shelf or in a planting, and it weathers outdoors without looking out of place.
The shells are 100% natural, eco-friendly and biodegradable — a by-product of the coconut harvest, put to work rather than burnt or thrown away.
Below are some of the ways the fibred halves are commonly used:
- Hanging planters — drilled and strung with cord, the half makes a rustic hanging pot for trailing plants, ferns and succulents.
- Bird feeders and nesting cups — hung from a branch, the half holds seed or fat balls, and the fibrous outside gives birds something to grip.
- Seed starters — a biodegradable pot for raising seedlings that can be planted out shell and all.
- Terrarium and vivarium features — the dome sits as a natural cave or hide among the planting.
- Reptile and small-pet hides — cut with an opening, the shell becomes a shelter that suits a humid enclosure.
- Rustic candle holders — the hollow half holds a pillar or tealight, with the fibre giving a warm, textured surround.
- Garden ornaments — set among beds and borders, or used as a small water or feed dish.
- Craft and carving stock — the fibre can be stripped back where you want it and left where you don't, so one shell offers two surfaces to work.
- Table and event styling — used as natural centrepieces, place markers and props for tropical and rustic settings.
- Handicraft bases — a starting blank for the carved and painted work of the Sri Lankan handicraft tradition.
Size and variation — each half measures roughly 12 cm (about 4¾ in) across and 10 cm (about 4 in) deep. Because every shell is a natural product, expect a variation of around 20% either way in both measurements, along with differences in colour, grain and marking. No two halves are identical, and they will not come from the same coconut.
