Mc Currie Sprats Badun is a ready-to-eat Sri Lankan accompaniment made from sprats slow-cooked with onion, chilli, curry leaves, sugar, and salt in RBD palm olein. It arrives in a sealed glass jar with a red metal lid, prepared to the standard the Mc Currie brand has maintained across its range of bottled Sri Lankan pantry staples.
The preparation follows the badun tradition — a method of frying small fish together with spiced aromatics until the mixture is deep in colour and concentrated in flavour. The result is intensely savoury, with the warmth of chilli and the fragrance of curry leaves running through every spoonful. It is a natural companion to plain rice, coconut sambol, and tempered dhal, and works just as well alongside a simple bowl of rice porridge.
This variant comes in a 120 g glass jar, which the label states holds four servings of 25 g each. The product is manufactured by Mc Currie Green Foods (Pvt) Ltd. at their Nalanda Industrial Zone facility in Madawala Ulpotha, and distributed by Lanka Spice (Pvt) Ltd. of Pannipitiya, Sri Lanka — a company incorporated in 1984 and accredited to ISO 22000:2018 food safety standards, among other certifications.
The jar is shelf-stable until opened, at which point the label asks that it be refrigerated. The label also carries an allergen advisory: the product is processed in a facility that handles seafood, nuts, mustard, and wheat flour. No artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives are added to the product.
