A novel by Chingiz Aitmatov, a writer born in Kirghizia, then part of the Soviet Union, here in Sinhala translation by Dedigama V. Rodrigo. The whole book is in Sinhala, so a reader without the language will not be able to follow it.
The story is built around Talganai, a Kirghiz woman who bears enormous suffering during the war. Her husband and her sons are sent away to fight, and the farming work falls to her alone. As she works the fields, she turns over her love for her family and the losses the war brought into her life, among them the deaths of those closest to her. Throughout the novel the author uses the fields as a figure for the wellspring of life and for the enduring spirit of motherhood and of the land.
Dedigama V. Rodrigo is known to Sinhala readers as a translator of Russian literature. This title had appeared earlier under other publishers; it is issued here by M. D. Gunasena & Co. with the official permission of the Russian embassy.
Of interest to readers who follow Soviet and Central Asian fiction in Sinhala, and to anyone building a collection of Rodrigo's translations. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should order it as a Sinhala-language book.
