Nuwara Eliya Special from Akbar is a 200 g pack of loose black tea from Nuwara Eliya, the highest tea-growing district in Sri Lanka. The cool, misty climate up there makes the bushes grow slowly, and the leaf it gives is lighter and more fragrant than teas from lower down.
The cup is pale golden and bright, with a floral, delicate aroma and a crisp, clean finish. Tea people often call Nuwara Eliya the champagne of Ceylon teas, and this is the tea to reach for in the afternoon or when guests are over.
Because the leaf is loose, it has room to open fully in the pot, which brings out its fragrance.
How to brew
- One level teaspoon of leaf per cup.
- Use water at about 90 C rather than a hard boil.
- Brew for about 3 minutes, then strain.
- Serve it plain or with a thin slice of lemon; milk tends to hide its light character.
Storage
- After opening, move the leaf to a clean airtight container.
- Keep it somewhere cool, dark and dry.
Blended and packed in Sri Lanka by Akbar Brothers, Colombo, the country's largest exporter of Ceylon tea.
