Minisun Athara

From$6.11

This is a Sinhala translation, by Dedigama V. Rodrigo, of Maxim Gorky's autobiographical novel known in English as My Apprenticeship — the text is entirely in Sinhala, so buyers should be comfortable reading the language before ordering.

Gorky was born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov and took his pen name later; he wrote as a Russian and then Soviet author. The book is the second of his autobiographical novels and covers his adolescence: leaving a difficult family household and setting out to find his own footing in the world. He works a succession of hard, poorly paid jobs — as an apprentice, as a dishwasher, as a labourer — and the narrative follows that effort to make a life. The harsh conditions of nineteenth-century Russia run through the account. It is also the period in which Gorky began turning towards literature.

Dedigama V. Rodrigo is the translator who brought the work into Sinhala, and his rendering has appeared before under other imprints. This edition is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, issued with the official permission of the Russian embassy.

It will suit Sinhala readers who follow translated Russian literature, readers working through Gorky's autobiographical sequence, and anyone building a Sinhala-language collection of world fiction abroad.
