A memoir of a marriage, compiled by Daya de Alwis and built around the poems, songs and notes that her husband, the lyricist Premakeerthi de Alwis, wrote out for her by hand over the years. The title speaks of a cave — the private space the two of them shared — and the book is an account of that shared life, of love and of loss.
What distinguishes it is the material itself. Rather than a straightforward narrative of remembrance, the book gathers the verses and jottings Premakeerthi gave to her from time to time in his own handwriting, set within her recollection of their years together. The writing is plain, and the feeling in it is not.
Premakeerthi de Alwis is known in Sri Lanka as a songwriter, and readers who come to this book will mostly come through his lyrics. Here he appears as a husband writing privately to one reader, with his wife as the compiler and the voice holding the material together.
The book is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text and no parallel translation, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading Sinhala prose and verse. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should be clear on that before ordering.
It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, an established Colombo publishing house issuing titles in Sinhala and English.
