Black peppercorns cracked into coarse pieces, packed by Malwatte in a 100g printed card carton. Cracked pepper sits between whole corns and fine powder: it gives visible flecks and bursts of heat without the need for a grinder.
Black pepper is the dried, unripe berry of the Piper nigrum vine. Malwatte Valley Plantations began growing pepper in 2011 and has processed its spices in its own factory since 2019; the maker says the International Pepper Community named it Sri Lanka's largest pepper grower in 2016.
In the pack
- 100g cracked black pepper
- Printed card carton, dark photographic design with the green Malwatte panel, Sinhala and Tamil names on the front
In the kitchen
Press it onto steak, chicken or tuna before searing, sprinkle it over salads, eggs and buttered vegetables, or stir it into pepper sauces and Sri Lankan pepper chicken. A 100g carton suits households that cook with pepper often; decant some into a shaker for the table.
Storage
Keep the carton tightly closed, or tip the contents into an airtight jar once opened, and store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Malwatte is the food brand of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC of Colombo, a Sri Lankan grower, manufacturer and exporter of tea and spices.
