Dried basil flakes from Malwatte, packed in a small glass shaker bottle holding 8g. Basil is a leafy herb of the mint family, and the dried flakes keep its sweet, peppery aroma ready for everyday cooking.
Basil is used in kitchens across the world, from Italian tomato sauces to Thai stir-fries, and it has a place in Sri Lankan cooking too. Dried flakes are a practical stand-in when fresh leaves are not to hand.
In the pack
- 8g dried basil flakes
- Glass shaker jar with a black screw cap and an "All Natural" label
In the kitchen
Crumble a pinch into tomato sauces, soups, pasta and pizza, or scatter it over roasted vegetables. Dried basil is stronger by volume than fresh: use about a third of the amount a recipe gives for fresh leaves, and add it during cooking so the flakes soften.
Storage
Keep the cap tightly closed and store the jar in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Labels in this range say to use the contents within 60 days of opening.
Malwatte is the food brand of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC of Colombo, a Sri Lankan grower, manufacturer and exporter of tea and spices.
