This is a Sinhala translation of Maxim Gorky's My Universities, the closing volume of the autobiographical sequence the Russian and Soviet writer — born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov — built from his own life. The text is in Sinhala throughout, so buyers outside Sri Lanka should order it as a Sinhala-language book.
Gorky turns here to his early adulthood: the period in which he tried to get himself an education and to pursue his intellectual and literary ambitions. He never attended a formal university, and the title carries his own answer to that — his life itself was his university. The narrative follows his continuing struggle against poverty and oppression, and traces his growing political consciousness and his wish for social change.
The Sinhala translation is by Dedigama V. Rodrigo, whose renderings of Russian literature are familiar to Sinhala readers. The work had appeared earlier under other publishers; it now comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co., issued with the official permission of the Russian embassy.
Suited to readers of Sinhala who are working through the Russian classics in translation, to anyone following Gorky's account of his own formation, and to collectors of Rodrigo's translation work.
