This is the Sinhala translation of My Childhood, the autobiographical novel by the Russian and Soviet writer born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, who took the name Maxim Gorky. The text is entirely in Sinhala; readers without the language will not be able to use it.
Gorky's account covers his early years — the hardship and struggle of a poor family, the harsh conditions of his childhood, and the efforts he made to come through them. It is written as a novel but draws directly on his own life, and it is the first part of his life that it concerns itself with.
The Sinhala rendering is by Dedigama V. Rodrigo, a translator long associated with bringing Russian literature into Sinhala. The work has appeared before under other publishers; this is a Gunasena publication, issued with the official permission of the Russian embassy.
M. D. Gunasena & Co. is an established Colombo publishing and bookselling house with a long list in Sinhala. For readers building a Sinhala shelf of translated Russian fiction, or for students and teachers working with Gorky in translation, this is the Sinhala text of a book that has been read in Sri Lanka for decades.
