Ranwan Kahata is the kahata tea of Bogawantalawa, a Sri Lankan tea company named after the Bogawantalawa valley in the central hills, opened to tea by Scottish planters in 1869.
Kahata is the plain black tea Sri Lankans drink without milk, brewed strong and often taken with a piece of jaggery or a spoon of sugar on the side. Ranwan means golden in Sinhala, a nod to the colour of the cup. This 100g pack comes in a bright red pouch with the name in yellow Sinhala script.
In the pack
- 100g loose black tea
- Red pouch with a Sinhala label
In the cup
A strong, clear black tea with a reddish golden colour, made to be drunk plain.
How to brew
Use one teaspoon (about 2.5 g) per cup and freshly boiled water. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes and strain. It is made strong, so adjust the spoon to taste.
Serving ideas
Serve hot in small glasses with jaggery on the side, the way kahata is taken in village homes and roadside tea shops across Sri Lanka. It also makes a good milk tea if you prefer.
Bogawantalawa is a Sri Lankan brand of pure Ceylon tea from Bogawantalawa Tea Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd of Ragama, named after the tea valley in the central hills where its estates lie.
