This is Maxim Gorky's novel Mother in Sinhala translation. The text is entirely in Sinhala, so a reader who does not read the language will not be able to use it.
Gorky was born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov and took the name under which he became known as a Russian and later Soviet writer. Mother is among his best-known novels and is regarded as an early work of socialist realism in Russian literature. The story is built around Pavel, the son of a factory worker, who becomes involved in the revolutionary movement growing against Tsarist rule. Through him the novel works through class struggle, sacrifice, and the awakening of political consciousness.
The Sinhala translation is by Dedigama V. Rodrigo, a translator long associated with bringing Russian fiction into Sinhala. The work had appeared earlier under other publishers; this edition comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co., a Colombo publishing house, issued with the official permission of the Russian embassy.
Of interest to Sinhala readers who want Gorky in their own language, to anyone following the long presence of Russian literature in Sri Lankan reading life, and to collectors of Dedigama V. Rodrigo's translations.
