Cumin is the dried seed of Cuminum cyminum, a herb of the parsley family that grows in tropical and sub-tropical climates, in areas with long, hot summers. Our seeds are grown by organic farmers without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides, then cleaned and milled in small batches into a fine, even powder and packed in Sri Lanka. Ground cumin has the same strong, warm, earthy aroma as the whole seed, ready to use straight from the pack. After black pepper, cumin is the most widely used spice in the world, and it has long been valued in Sri Lankan kitchens and traditional households.

100% organic certified by USDA Organic and Control Union. In plain terms, that means the crop is grown on land farmed to organic standards and the seed is handled and milled under a system that independent inspectors check, from the grower through to the packed powder. You are buying ground cumin and nothing else.

  • Ground cumin powder, milled from whole dried cumin seed
  • Grown without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides
  • Sourced from organic growers and processed in small batches
  • Free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives

Cumin powder is used above all as a flavouring for meat and vegetable dishes, and it lifts the taste of omelettes, curries and soups. It is one of the basic ingredients of curry powders and chilli powders, so it belongs in any spice cupboard where those blends are mixed at home. Because the powder is already ground, stir it into a dish while the onions or aromatics are still cooking so the warmth of the spice carries through the whole pot, or add it to a dry rub or marinade. A little goes a long way; the earthy note is strong and builds quickly.

Lakpura works with organic growers across Sri Lanka to bring the island's spices to the table in their simplest form.
