Goraka is the fruit that gives Sri Lankan fish and meat curries their distinctive sour depth — a flavour that tamarind and lime can approximate but never quite replicate. Lakpura's Goraka paste takes the traditional rind of the goraka fruit (Garcinia cambogia) and presents it in a ready-to-use form, sparing the cook the labour of sourcing, sun-drying and smoking the fruit at home.

The goraka tree is a slow-growing evergreen native to Sri Lanka's tropical wet and intermediate zones. Its small, pumpkin-shaped fruits start deep green and ripen to yellow; it is the rind that carries the sharp, concentrated sourness that Sri Lankan cooks prize. Traditionally, that rind is sun-dried, then smoked and treated with salt and oil — a preservation method passed down through generations of Sri Lankan households, where goraka has long been considered as essential to the kitchen as salt itself.

Two dishes above all others depend on goraka: Fish Ambulthiyal, the dry, intensely spiced tuna curry of the Southern Province, and Black Pork Curry, where the fruit's sourness cuts through rich meat. In both, goraka does more than add acidity — it shapes the whole character of the dish. Substituting another souring agent changes the result in ways that are immediately apparent to anyone familiar with the originals.

Lakpura packages this paste in a glass jar with a gold metal screw lid, available in 100g and 250g sizes. The jar format keeps the paste sealed and easy to measure, with no need for the soaking or grinding that dried rind requires. It is produced by Lakpura Solutions (Pvt) Ltd in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
