This is a Sinhala retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, published as part of a series of fairy tale books made for young children in Sri Lanka. The Sinhala title, Maya Bonchi Wela, translates as "the magic beanstalk".
The text is set in simple Sinhala, pitched at children who are beginning to read on their own or who are being read to at home. The book is printed on gloss paper with colour illustrations throughout.
The adaptation is by Priyangwada Perera, and it comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a Colombo publishing house of long standing whose list includes school and children's titles.
Buyers outside Sri Lanka should note that the book is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text. It will suit Sinhala-speaking families abroad looking for familiar stories in the language spoken at home, parents keeping up a child's Sinhala reading, and teachers of Sinhala to young learners. Readers who do not read the Sinhala script will find the pictures carry the story, but the words will be closed to them.
