Deniyaya Special is a regional tea from Akbar: 200g of loose leaf black tea from Deniyaya, in the hills of southern Sri Lanka.
Deniyaya lies on the edge of the Sinharaja rainforest, in the Matara district. Its tea is low-grown, from warm, wet and misty country, and low-grown teas tend to give a darker, fuller cup than the high-grown teas of the central hills. Deniyaya is the smoother, rounder side of that style: the liquor is a rich reddish colour, the taste is mellow, and there is little harshness even when brewed strong.
That makes it a reliable everyday tea, plain in the afternoon or with milk in the morning. It also suits gifting to anyone who likes to compare single-region teas.
