White sesame seeds from Malwatte, packed in a flat printed sachet. The pack shot shows pale, hulled seeds, which have a mild, nutty flavour that deepens when they are toasted.
Sesame, called thala in Sinhala, is the main ingredient of the Sri Lankan sweet thala guli. Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC has exported since 1992 and processes and packs its spices in its own factories, which hold ISO 22000 certification.
In the pack
- White sesame seeds (the maker lists this sachet as 50g)
- Flat printed sachet with a grey and gold label
The grey label prints the name in English, Sinhala and Tamil, the words "All Natural" and a reminder to use the contents within 60 days of opening.
In the kitchen
- Toast in a dry pan and scatter over stir fries and salads
- Press onto bread rolls, buns and biscuits before baking
- Use in sweets such as thala guli and sesame brittle
- Add to noodle dishes, dressings and marinades
Storage
Keep the sachet tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. The label asks you to use the contents within 60 days of opening; tipping them into an airtight jar after opening helps.
Malwatte is the food brand of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC of Colombo, a Sri Lankan grower, manufacturer and exporter of tea and spices.
