Extra Strong is the boldest everyday black tea of Bogawantalawa, a Sri Lankan tea company named after the Bogawantalawa valley in the central hills, where tea has been grown since 1869.
It is made strong: a deep, full-bodied black tea that gives plenty of colour and body from a small spoonful. The 100g pouch is the trial size, labelled in Sinhala with a red top, a cup of tea and fresh green tea leaves. The maker describes its teas as climate positive.
In the pack
- 100g loose black tea
- Extra Strong range, Sinhala-labelled pouch
In the cup
Dark, heavy and malty, built to hold its own under milk and sugar.
How to brew
Use one teaspoon (about 2.5 g) per cup and freshly boiled water, and steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Because it is strong, many people use a little less tea per cup.
Serving ideas
Brewed strong and drunk plain it makes kahata, the black tea Sri Lankans drink without milk, often with a piece of jaggery or a spoon of sugar on the side. With hot milk and sugar it makes a rich breakfast cup.
Bogawantalawa is a Sri Lankan brand of pure Ceylon tea from Bogawantalawa Tea Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd of Ragama, named after the tea valley in the central hills where its estates lie.
