Tourmaline

Few gemstones offer the colour range of tourmaline. From deep forest green to soft watermelon pink, its palette is broader than almost any other mineral species, and Sri Lanka has been supplying fine specimens to the world's gem markets for centuries. Understanding why tourmaline comes in so many colours — and what makes Sri Lankan material distinctive — starts with the stone's unusually complex chemistry.

What makes tourmaline so colourful?

Tourmaline is not a single mineral but a group of closely related boron silicate minerals that share a common crystal structure. That structure can accommodate an exceptional number of chemical substitutions — iron, manganese, chromium, vanadium, copper, and other trace elements can each slot into the lattice and shift the colour in a different direction. The result is a species that, more than almost any other gem mineral, registers every change in its geological environment as a change in hue.

Because of this chemical flexibility, two tourmaline crystals from the same deposit can look completely different, and a single crystal can display two or three colours in distinct zones — a phenomenon that produces the celebrated watermelon variety, with its green rind and pink or red interior.

What tourmaline varieties are found in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lankan tourmalines tend toward the green and yellowish-green end of the spectrum, though a range of other colours is recoverable from the island's gem-bearing gravels and metamorphic outcrops. Among the most commercially significant are stones composed of mixed Dravite and Uvite crystals, sometimes sold under the trade name Savanna Tourmaline.

  • Dravite is rich in sodium, magnesium, and aluminium. On its own it tends toward brown, yellowish-brown, or reddish-brown tones.
  • Uvite is rich in calcium, magnesium, and aluminium and often presents similarly dark or brownish colours in pure form.
  • When Dravite-Uvite mixtures contain trace amounts of vanadium, chromium, or both in the right concentrations, the result is a vivid green that can resemble tsavorite garnet — and that is the material gem dealers know as Savanna Tourmaline.

Both end-members crystallise in limestone that has been altered by heat and pressure (a process called contact or regional metamorphism), which is precisely the geological setting found across Sri Lanka's Highland Series rocks.

Beyond the Dravite-Uvite series, Sri Lanka also produces:

  • Bi-coloured tourmaline — crystals showing two distinct colour zones, often green and yellow or pink and green.
  • Watermelon tourmaline — the classic green-exterior, pink-interior variety, cut in slices or as cabochons to show the colour contrast.
  • Cat's eye tourmaline — fibrous inclusions oriented parallel to the crystal axis produce a silky chatoyant band when the stone is cut en cabochon.
  • Alexandrite-like tourmaline — a rare colour-change variety that shifts hue under different light sources; genuinely fine examples are uncommon.

How does Sri Lankan tourmaline compare with other world sources?

Brazil is the world's largest tourmaline producer and provides the widest range of colours, including the vivid blue-green Paraíba tourmaline coloured by copper. California and Maine in the United States have long histories of producing gem-quality pink and green material. More recent commercial sources include Pakistan, which yields fine blues, pinks, and greens from Himalayan pegmatites, as well as Madagascar, Tanzania, Kenya, Russia, and Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka's contribution is somewhat more specialised: the island is particularly noted for its green Dravite-Uvite stones and for the occasional fine cat's eye, rather than for high-saturation pinks or the copper-bearing neons of Brazil. Sri Lankan material is often found as water-worn pebbles in alluvial gem gravels — the same deposits that yield sapphires, spinels, and chrysoberyls — which means it is frequently well-rounded and needs careful orientation when cutting.

At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, tourmaline is durable enough for everyday jewellery but should still be protected from hard knocks. Unlike corundum, it has no cleavage, so chips rather than splits when struck.

Are most tourmalines on the market treated?

Two treatments are widely used in the trade: heat treatment and irradiation. Heat treatment can lighten or deepen colour in certain tourmalines — in particular, brownish or reddish stones can sometimes be driven toward a cleaner green or pink — and the changes are generally stable and undetectable by standard gemological testing. However, stones with abundant liquid inclusions (a fairly common feature in some Sri Lankan material) cannot safely withstand heat and must be left untreated or risk fracturing.

Irradiation is used to induce or intensify pink and red tones. Unlike heat, irradiated colours can fade if the stone is exposed to prolonged heat or strong light over time. When buying fine tourmaline, it is reasonable to ask the vendor whether any treatment has been applied, though disclosure practices vary by market.

How should tourmaline be cared for?

Tourmaline is relatively stable in normal conditions. It is not particularly sensitive to most household chemicals and resists mild acids better than softer stones. That said, a few precautions apply:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause some irradiated stones to fade gradually.
  • Keep tourmaline away from sustained heat — steam cleaning is not recommended, and leaving jewellery in a hot car or near a stove carries risk.
  • Clean gently with warm soapy water and a soft brush; rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Store separately from harder gems such as sapphire or diamond, which can scratch the tourmaline surface.

What is tourmaline's place in gem history?

Tourmaline's long history of misidentification is one of the more entertaining chapters in mineralogy. In the 1500s, a Spanish conquistador discovered green tourmaline in Brazil and recorded it as emerald — a mistake that stood uncorrected for roughly three centuries, until mineralogists in the early 1800s established tourmaline as its own distinct species. The darker, black variety has an even older name: schorl, a term that appears in European mining records as far back as the late 1300s, used to describe the black crystals found as a common accessory mineral in tin-mining districts.

In Sri Lanka, tourmaline has been collected from gem gravels alongside sapphires and spinels for centuries, though it has historically occupied a secondary position in local gem commerce compared with the island's celebrated blue sapphires. Growing international interest in collector-quality green and bi-coloured material has brought Sri Lankan tourmaline greater attention in recent decades.
