A bilingual dictionary compiled by W S Karunathilaka, giving Sinhala equivalents for Tamil headwords. It is a working reference book rather than a phrasebook or a course, intended to be kept at hand and consulted word by word.
Buyers outside Sri Lanka should know that there is no English in it. Headwords are in Tamil script and the definitions are in Sinhala script, so using it assumes you can already read both. That makes it useful to Sinhala speakers learning or working in Tamil, to Tamil speakers checking a Sinhala rendering, and to translators, teachers, students and public servants who move between the two languages in the course of their work. Anyone without both scripts will find it hard going.
It is a substantial hardworking volume, the sort of book bought once and used for years, and it is heavy for its size — worth bearing in mind if you are ordering more than one title.
Published by Godage International Publishers, an established Colombo house whose list covers Sinhala and Tamil reference, language and general titles. Copies of Sri Lankan bilingual reference books are not commonly stocked outside the island, which is the usual reason people order them from here.
