Sustagen Nutritional Supplement Chocolate is a chocolate-flavoured powder made by Mead Johnson Nutrition and produced in Thailand. It comes in a 400 g can and is available as a single tin or in a pack of two. The powder is formulated to be very low in fat and is labelled high calcium on-pack, and it carries Halal certification from The Central Islamic Council of Thailand.
The ingredient list begins with non-fat milk powder and whole milk powder, with corn syrup solids and sucrose providing carbohydrate alongside cocoa powder for the chocolate flavour. The formula includes a broad range of minerals — among them calcium phosphate, zinc sulfate, potassium citrate and potassium iodide — and a full complement of vitamins including alpha-tocopheryl acetate, beta carotene, cholecalciferol, cyanocobalamin, folic acid, niacinamide, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, thiamine hydrochloride and vitamin A palmitate. Sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid serve as antioxidants, and natural and artificial vanilla flavours round out the formulation. The powder provides 1590 kJ per 100 g, with full nutrition information set out on the label per 50 g, per 100 g and per 400 g.
Because the product is formulated to be very low in fat, the on-pack labelling notes that a fat source rich in essential fatty acids should be added to the diet if Sustagen is used as the sole source of nutrition for more than four to six weeks.
To prepare, measure the powder into water and mix by hand or with an electric mixer until smooth. The prepared beverage is best consumed straight away; if that is not possible, keep it refrigerated. The dry scoop should be stored inside the can between uses.
Store the unopened or opened can in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly closed. Once opened, use within one month. Do not freeze the powder or leave it in conditions of excessive heat for prolonged periods. The expiry date is printed on the bottom of the can.
