Lakpura® Single Region Uva Black Tea comes from Uva, the tea country on the eastern face of Sri Lanka's central mountains. It is a brisk, aromatic tea with a bright, coppery cup and a character that sets it apart from the teas of the western slopes.
Uva sits on the far side of the hills, around the town of Badulla, and its estates are exposed to both of the island's monsoons. Deep passes cut through the mountains on its western edge, and through the middle of the year, while the west is soaked by the southwest monsoon, these gaps funnel a dry, sharp wind across the Uva slopes. The bushes struggle in that wind and grow slowly, and the teas of this dry quality season are the most prized the region makes.
The result is a cup with a pronounced aroma and a lively, brisk taste over a medium body. The Sri Lanka Tea Board sums it up as exotically aromatic, the words printed on the pack in the photographs, and in a good season the aroma is what you notice first.
The family comes in two formats. The 100g pack holds BOP grade loose leaf, Broken Orange Pekoe, small broken leaf that gives a brisk, bright pot. The 50g box holds 25 tea bags of BOPF grade, Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings, a finer particle that infuses quickly into a strong single cup.
Brew it with freshly boiled water. It is a fine tea black, where the aroma comes through clearly, and it takes milk well for a brisk morning cup. Once opened, keep the pack closed and away from light, moisture and strong smells.
