The 1kg pouch is the bulk size of Extra Strong, the boldest everyday black tea from Bogawantalawa. The company is named after the Bogawantalawa valley in Sri Lanka's central hills, where Scottish planters opened tea estates in 1869.
Extra Strong is made strong, dark and full bodied. A kilo suits cafes, canteens, offices and large households, or anyone who brews by the pot. The pouch carries the same Sinhala label as the smaller sizes, with a red top band and a cup of tea over green leaves, and the maker describes its teas as climate positive.
In the pack
- 1kg loose black tea
- Extra Strong range, Sinhala-labelled pouch
In the cup
Robust, malty and deep reddish brown, with body to spare under milk and sugar.
How to brew
Use one teaspoon (about 2.5 g) per cup and freshly boiled water, and steep for 3 to 5 minutes. For a large pot, count one spoon per cup. Once opened, move some into a tin or jar and keep the rest sealed.
Serving ideas
Brew it for kahata, the strong plain tea of Sri Lanka drunk without milk and often with a piece of jaggery or sugar on the side, or for big pots of milk tea and spiced chai.
Bogawantalawa is a Sri Lankan brand of pure Ceylon tea from Bogawantalawa Tea Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd of Ragama, named after the tea valley in the central hills where its estates lie.
