A simple Sinhala retelling of Beauty and the Beast, prepared by Hiruni Fernando for young children. The story appears here under the Sinhala title Surupi saha Rassaya, and it belongs to a series of fairy tale books made for children in Sri Lanka.
The text is written in plain, straightforward Sinhala, pitched at children who are still early readers or who are being read to at home. Colour illustrations run through the book, which is printed on glossy paper.
The whole book is in Sinhala — the story, the title and any text accompanying the pictures. There is no English text alongside it. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should order it on that basis: it suits Sinhala-speaking households abroad, families keeping the language alive with children born overseas, and anyone reading at a beginner's level in Sinhala who already knows the shape of the story in another language and can follow it here.
It comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a Colombo publishing house of long standing whose list includes school and children's books in Sinhala and English.
