The 400g pouch of Extra Strong is the family size of the strongest everyday black tea from Bogawantalawa, a Sri Lankan tea company whose estates lie in the Bogawantalawa valley of the central hills, planted with tea since 1869.
Extra Strong is made to brew strong: dark, full bodied and robust. The Sinhala-labelled pouch has a red top band, a cup of tea and fresh green leaves. At 400g it holds roughly 160 cups at a teaspoon each, enough for a busy kitchen. The maker describes its teas as climate positive.
In the pack
- 400g loose black tea
- Extra Strong range, Sinhala-labelled pouch
In the cup
A dark, malty, heavy cup that keeps its colour and taste under milk and sugar.
How to brew
Use one teaspoon (about 2.5 g) per cup and freshly boiled water, and steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Store the pouch closed, away from light and strong smells.
Serving ideas
It makes good kahata: strong black tea drunk plain, without milk, as many Sri Lankans take it, with jaggery or sugar on the side. It also makes a sturdy milk tea or the base for spiced chai.
Bogawantalawa is a Sri Lankan brand of pure Ceylon tea from Bogawantalawa Tea Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd of Ragama, named after the tea valley in the central hills where its estates lie.
