Link Samahan is an instant Ayurvedic herbal drink from Link Natural Products (Pvt) Ltd, supplied as a fine dark powder in a 4 g sachet that dissolves in a cup of hot water. It is a packaged, standardised version of the peyawa, the hot herbal decoction Sri Lankan households once brewed at home from raw roots and spices over a long simmer; the herbs are the familiar ones of Ayurvedic practice and of the home kitchen alike, and the sachet saves the brewing. It is drunk hot, and by long custom Sri Lankans reach for a peyawa when the weather turns cold or wet. Launched in 1995, it has become one of the best-known consumer products in the country and is now widely exported; the carton is marked "A Product of Sri Lanka" and carries the line "Registered at the Department of Ayurveda".

What the carton claims, and what it rests on. The claim panel prints, in these words: "Link Samahan taken daily is clinically proven to prevent the incidence of the following 15 symptoms of cold and catarrh" — the fifteen listed being excessive sneezing, nasal congestion, watery nasal discharge, scratchy throat, cough, hoarseness of voice, throat pain, feverishness, headache, itchy eyes and tearing, itchy ears and blocked ears, tiredness, body pains, loss of appetite, and difficulties in day to day work. That line is not built on nothing: it rests on a published study by Goonaratna and Sooriyarachchi in the Ceylon Medical Journal in March 2012, a randomised controlled trial of upper respiratory symptoms in healthy volunteers whose abstract names Link Samahan and its fourteen-plant extract. It is worth being clear about what that trial can and cannot carry. It was open-label — the participants knew which group they had been put in — and every outcome was a symptom the participants scored themselves, which is the kind of measurement most affected by knowing what you have taken. One unblinded trial does not make something "proven", and the carton's wording claims more than the evidence behind it supports. Read it as the manufacturer's claim, supported by a single early study rather than settled.

The pack's directions. For daily use, the carton says to take one sachet a day with hot milk, tea, coffee, hot water or your preferred hot beverage — dissolve the contents of a sachet in a cup of hot water or hot drink and serve. At the first sign of cold or catarrh symptoms, it directs adults to take 1-2 sachets, 2-3 times a day. For children from 3-5 years, it says half a sachet may be given with a preferred beverage. Note that three years is the lowest age the carton sets, and it says nothing at all about children under three, so if you are thinking of giving it to a younger child, ask a doctor or pharmacist first.

Nutrition and sugar. The pack lists fourteen herbs with cane sugar as the only other ingredient, and states "Contains 14 herbal ingredients. 100% Natural. No added colours or preservatives." Per 4 g sachet the panel gives 62.7 kJ / 15.0 kcal, fat 0 g, carbohydrate 3.93 g of which sugars 3.93 g, protein 0 g, and salt less than 0.01 g. In plain terms, the sachet is mostly cane sugar carrying the herb extract — roughly a teaspoon of sugar in a cup — so anyone counting sugar, and particularly anyone with diabetes, should count it. That matters more than usual here, because the pack's own instruction at the first sign of symptoms runs to as many as six sachets in a day. Store in a cool, dry place. The carton also carries ISO 9001, ISO 14001, GMP and HACCP marks, which certify the company, not this product or its effects. Export cartons repeat the ingredient and nutrition panels in French, Italian, German and Arabic alongside Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Please read before use. Each sachet carries about a teaspoon of sugar, so factor it into your day if you are watching your sugar intake or managing diabetes. The carton gives no instruction for children under three years, so ask a doctor or pharmacist before giving it to a child of that age. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a health condition, or taking regular medication, ask a doctor first. This is a traditional herbal drink, not a substitute for medical care: a fever, or symptoms that are severe, unusual or persistent, needs a doctor rather than a hot drink. Link Natural also makes a topical balm under the same brand, called Link Samahan SP Balm, which is a separate product. Lakpura ships Link Samahan from Sri Lanka.
