Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara is an adults-only Ayurveda retreat on the beach at Moragalla, Beruwala, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast. It began life in 1973 as the Hotel Neptune, designed by Geoffrey Bawa and the first hotel of the Aitken Spence group, and after a complete refurbishment it reopened in 2011 as a resort devoted entirely to Ayurveda. "Maha Gedara" means "ancestral home" in Sinhala, a nod to its place as the group's first hotel. Guests come here for physician-led wellness programmes, daily treatments and meals planned around their body type, in a quiet garden that opens onto the Indian Ocean.
The resort stands on Galle Road at Moragalla, on the northern side of Beruwala, with its lawns running straight down to the beach. Bentota's river and beaches lie a short drive to the south. Colombo is about 1 hour 45 minutes away by car.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 90 km from the resort, and the drive usually takes around two hours along the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. After a long-haul flight, the calmest start to an Ayurveda stay is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. Every stay starts with a consultation with one of the resort's Ayurveda physicians, who prescribes treatments, herbal medicines and a diet suited to your constitution. Programmes include Rejuvenation, Stress Relief, Skin Health, Smoke & Alcohol Detox, Women's Health, Mindfulness and Weight Management, as well as customised plans. The Rejuvenation programme runs for a minimum of 7 days on full board, with Panchakarma therapies, and guests on a programme typically receive 4 treatments a day. Yoga is held 11 times a week, every morning and on four afternoons, alongside meditation and Ayurvedic cookery demonstrations.
There are 64 rooms in four categories. The 36 Deluxe rooms look over the ocean or the garden, the 16 Classic rooms have a partial ocean view, and the 5 Corner Luxury rooms have their own jacuzzi. The 7 Suites, the largest rooms at around 61 m², face the ocean and have a rain shower. The rooms are finished in whitewashed walls, arched windows and warm timber, in keeping with the character of the original building.
Meals are served in the resort's restaurant, which looks over the garden to the ocean. The kitchen follows Ayurvedic principles, balancing each dish for the vata, pitta and kapha body types, with a buffet as well as dishes cooked to order, so your meals support the treatments prescribed by your physician. The resort is alcohol-free, and herbal teas are served through the day.
Most guests come to rest, but the coast around the resort is worth a gentle outing. Beruwala's fishing harbour and the historic Kechimalai Mosque are close by, and to the south the Bentota River offers quiet boat trips through the mangroves. Brief Garden, created by Bevis Bawa, and Lunuganga, the country estate of his brother Geoffrey Bawa, make an easy half-day trip. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and excursions to all of these from the resort.
