Brassica oleracea var. botrytis is the botanical name for cauliflower, a cultivated variety of the species Brassica oleracea in the family Brassicaceae. It is grown for its dense, compact flower head known as the curd. In Sri Lanka, it is included in the catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Is cauliflower used in Ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, cauliflower is recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog. Traditional practice values it for its digestive and nutritive properties, and it is often included in dietary protocols by Ayurvedic practitioners alongside herbal preparations.

Question 3

Where is cauliflower grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cauliflower is primarily cultivated in Sri Lanka's upcountry hill regions, especially around Nuwara Eliya and Badulla, where cool temperatures and higher elevations replicate the temperate conditions the crop requires. Smallholder farming communities in these areas supply both local and urban markets.

Question 4

What are the health benefits of cauliflower?

Accepted Answer

Cauliflower is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, choline, and dietary fibre. It also contains glucosinolates, sulphur compounds whose metabolites are studied for potential roles in cellular health. Its high water content and mild diuretic properties make it a useful component in detoxification-focused dietary regimes.

Question 5

What does Brassica oleracea var. botrytis taste like and how is it cooked in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cauliflower has a mild, slightly nutty flavour that absorbs spices well. In Sri Lanka it is most commonly cooked as a dry curry with roasted curry powder, turmeric, and mustard seeds, or prepared in a coconut-milk gravy. Lightly cooked preparations are preferred in Ayurvedic dietary guidance for better digestibility.

Question 6

What is the catalog reference for Brassica oleracea var. botrytis in Lakpura's Ayurvedic plant catalog?
