Question 3

Where is cauliflower grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cauliflower is primarily cultivated in Sri Lanka's upcountry hill regions, especially around Nuwara Eliya and Badulla, where cool temperatures and higher elevations replicate the temperate conditions the crop requires. Smallholder farming communities in these areas supply both local and urban markets.

Question 4

What are the health benefits of cauliflower?

Accepted Answer

Cauliflower is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, choline, and dietary fibre. It also contains glucosinolates, sulphur compounds whose metabolites are studied for potential roles in cellular health. Its high water content and mild diuretic properties make it a useful component in detoxification-focused dietary regimes.

What does Brassica oleracea var. botrytis taste like and how is it cooked in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cauliflower has a mild, slightly nutty flavour that absorbs spices well. In Sri Lanka it is most commonly cooked as a dry curry with roasted curry powder, turmeric, and mustard seeds, or prepared in a coconut-milk gravy. Lightly cooked preparations are preferred in Ayurvedic dietary guidance for better digestibility.
