Question 1

What is Brassica campestris var. rapa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurveda, Brassica campestris var. rapa — the turnip — is used to support digestive function, as a diuretic, and in preparations addressing respiratory and metabolic complaints. Different parts of the plant, including the root, leaves, seeds, and seed oil, are employed for distinct therapeutic purposes. Qualified ayurvedic practitioners determine dosage and combination based on individual patient constitution.

Question 2

Is Brassica campestris var. rapa the same as a common turnip?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Brassica campestris var. rapa is the botanical name for the common turnip and closely related field mustard biotypes. The variety rapa specifically refers to the fleshy-rooted turnip form widely grown as a vegetable and medicinal crop. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family, which also includes cabbage, mustard, and radish.

Question 3

Where is Brassica campestris var. rapa grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, the turnip is primarily cultivated in the cooler central highlands, especially around the Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts. It requires cool temperatures and well-drained soil to produce good root yield. Most cultivation takes place during the Maha season, roughly October to February.

Question 4

What are the active compounds in Brassica campestris var. rapa?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains glucosinolates, flavonoids, carotenoids, and erucic acid, among other phytochemicals. Glucosinolates break down into isothiocyanates, which have studied antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The plant also provides vitamin C, folate, calcium, and potassium.

Question 5

What is the ayurvedic catalogue reference number for this plant?

Accepted Answer

Brassica campestris var. rapa is registered under the reference LK94006744 in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue. This code is used for research, regulatory, and clinical standardisation purposes within the national indigenous medicine framework.

Question 6

Can Brassica campestris var. rapa interact with thyroid medications?

Accepted Answer

High intakes of glucosinolates, found in Brassica family plants including turnip, can potentially interfere with thyroid iodine uptake. This is generally a concern only with therapeutic-level concentrated preparations rather than normal dietary consumption. Individuals with thyroid conditions should consult a registered ayurvedic or medical practitioner before using concentrated turnip preparations.

Question 7

How is Brassica campestris var. rapa prepared in traditional Sri Lankan medicine?

Accepted Answer

Common preparations include fresh root juice, decoctions simmered from dried root pieces, powdered churna mixed with honey or water, and medicated seed oil for external use. The appropriate preparation and dose depend on the condition being treated and the patient's constitution, and are typically prescribed by a qualified vaidya.
