This jar from Malwatte Valley's UVA range contains a blend of whole black and white peppercorns — two forms of the same berry at different stages of maturity, brought together in a single clear jar with a combined grinder and shaker cap so you can use them straight from the bottle at the table or over the hob.
Black peppercorns are the dried, unripe berries of Piper nigrum, harvested before they fully ripen and dried to develop their familiar dark, wrinkled skin and sharp, resinous heat. White peppercorns come from the same plant but are left on the vine longer, then soaked to remove the outer skin before drying, which gives them a cleaner, earthier warmth with less of the sharp bite. Together in one jar, they bring a more layered flavour to a dish than either alone.
Malwatte Valley Plantations, founded in 1992, is Sri Lanka's largest grower of black pepper — a distinction formally recognised by the International Pepper Community. The plantation estate spans over 7,000 hectares, and the peppercorns are hand-picked before being processed and packaged in the company's own factory, which holds ISO 22000:2005 certification and Rainforest Alliance membership. The label carries the designation 'ALL NATURAL' and a QR code that links to further product information.
The jar's dual grinder and shaker cap means the peppercorns can be ground fresh directly onto food or shaken out already cracked if the grinder mechanism is used. The clear jar lets you see the two-tone mix of black and ivory peppercorns at a glance. It suits both kitchen use and a place on the dining table as a condiment. The net weight of the jar is 50g.
As an adventurous table blend, the black and white peppercorns work across a wide range of cooking — cracked over grilled or roasted meats, stirred into sauces and dressings, ground into marinades, or used whole in braises and stocks where long cooking draws out their depth gradually.
