Badulla sits in the hill country of Sri Lanka, and its coffee land is not all at one height. The district's mixed elevations mean that two species share the same region: Coffea arabica on the higher ground and Robusta on the lower. That spread is the point of Badulla. Arabica and Robusta lots grown within the same district give the region's beans a wide range of body and caffeine, and once roasted they are known for bold flavours across a broad spectrum rather than a single narrow profile. These beans are green and unroasted — raw coffee as it left the mill, for buyers who roast their own. Coffee also carries the older half of the island's plantation history: it was the crop grown here in the colonial era, before Ceylon tea arrived.

How Badulla processes its coffee: the region works to its own traditional, time-tested method, and the method is not fixed in advance. Whether a lot goes through the wet or the dry process is decided by the sun the season has given, the altitude the lot was grown at, and the judgement of the farmer group or plantation that grew it. Growers at different heights in the same district may reach different decisions in the same year, which is part of why Badulla lots vary as much as they do.

  • Raw, unroasted green coffee beans from the Badulla region — nothing here has been roasted or ground.
  • A mix of Arabica and Robusta from the district's mixed elevations, covering a range of body and caffeine.
  • Processed by the region's traditional wet or dry method, chosen by season, altitude and grower judgement.
  • Screened, graded and sorted by moisture level and overall quality before packing.

Buying unroasted puts the roast in your hands: you decide how far to take each Badulla lot, and the Arabica and Robusta in the region's range respond differently to the same approach. Lakpura collects in small batches from village-based smallholder groups and selected plantation partners who follow responsible farming practices, then brings the beans to its own facility, where they are screened, graded and sorted by moisture level and quality before packing.
