Kahata is the Sri Lankan name for strong black tea drunk plain, without milk. This leafy black tea from Bogawantalawa is made for it and comes in a 200g pouch with a Sinhala label.
In Sri Lanka kahata is brewed strong and served hot, often with a piece of jaggery or a spoon of sugar on the side rather than stirred in. A leafy black tea gives the clear, bright cup that suits this way of drinking.
In the pack
- 200g loose leaf black tea
- Pouch with a Sinhala label
- Pure Ceylon tea
In the cup
Strong, clear and reddish-brown, with a bold, slightly astringent taste meant to be drunk plain.
How to brew
- Use a heaped teaspoon of leaf per cup, as kahata is made strong.
- Pour on freshly boiled water and brew for 4 to 5 minutes.
- Strain and serve without milk, with jaggery or sugar on the side.
