The experience includes the boat transfer to Pigeon Island, a snorkelling session at the reef, all snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel, and fins), and park entrance fees. Hotel pick-up and drop-off in the Trincomalee area is available as an optional extra.
Is this suitable for people who have never snorkelled before?
Yes. The reef at Pigeon Island lies in shallow water, which makes it accessible to those snorkelling for the first time. A safety briefing and equipment fitting are provided before entering the water.
When is the best time of year to go?
The east coast of Sri Lanka has its dry season roughly from May to September, when sea conditions are calm and underwater visibility is at its best. The northeast monsoon outside this window can make conditions less suitable for snorkelling.
Are there any rules I need to follow in the water?
The Department of Wildlife Conservation prohibits walking on the reef and snorkelling within designated no-go zones. Visitors are expected to remain within the permitted snorkelling areas to protect the coral.
Will I see sharks or turtles?
Blacktip reef sharks and sea turtles are both present in the park's waters, and sightings do occur. However, any wildlife encounter depends on the day and conditions, so neither can be guaranteed.
