Un jeep aperto 4x4, che trasporta un massimo di sei passeggeri, ti preleva gratuitamente da qualsiasi luogo entro 5 km dal cancello del parco e ti porta direttamente verso l'area del lago, dove le concentrazioni di fauna selvatica sono più alte. Il tuo conducente funge anche da tracciatore, leggendo il terreno della prateria aperta, della vegetazione arbustiva e del margine del bacino che rendono questo parco uno dei più ricchi dello Sri Lanka.
Minneriya è soprattutto nota per il Raduno, quando centinaia di elefanti selvatici convergono sul Bacino di Minneriya mentre la stagione secca espone le sue sponde erbose — mandrie di adulti, adolescenti e vitelli che pascolano insieme sulla pianura aperta. Il parco ospita anche cervi, scimmie, coccodrilli, leopardi e un'abbondante varietà di uccelli. Il safari dura circa tre ore, con una bottiglia d'acqua per persona inclusa; i bambini a partire dai cinque anni sono benvenuti.
