About this experience

This full-day private tour travels from Colombo into Sri Lanka's Central Highlands, tracing a route that takes in a riverside elephant orphanage, one of Asia's most significant botanical gardens, and the sacred heart of the last Sinhalese royal capital — all within a single unhurried day, with a chauffeur guide handling the driving and the commentary throughout.

The journey begins at 06:30 from your Colombo hotel and pauses first at Pinnawala, roughly halfway to Kandy in Sabaragamuwa Province. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 on a former coconut plantation beside the Ma Oya River to care for wild Asian elephants that had been orphaned, injured, or separated from their herds. Today three generations of elephants — more than seventy animals in total — live here under the care of around seventy mahouts, making it the largest captive elephant herd in the world. Visitors watch the herd move to the river to bathe, a daily routine that gives a genuine sense of the animals' scale and social bonds, with young calves staying close to older females across the water.

From Pinnawala the route continues to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, set within a broad curve of the Mahaweli River roughly five kilometres west of Kandy city. Formally established by the British administration in 1821, the gardens now cover 147 acres and contain more than 4,000 labelled plant species: orchids, spice plants, ferns, towering fan palms, and an Avenue of Royal Palms that gives the garden its most photogenic straight-line view. The National Herbarium of Sri Lanka is attached to the gardens, lending the site a serious scientific character behind its ornamental appearance. Depending on your pace, there is also the option to visit local craft workshops in Kandy — covering gem-cutting, woodcarving, and batik — before moving on.

Kandy itself sits at roughly 500 metres above sea level in the Central Highlands and served as the capital of the Sinhalese kings from 1592 until the British ousted the last Kandyan king in 1815. The city's historic core, including the lake and the temple complex along its southern shore, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Kandy Lake — known in Sinhala as Kiri Muhuda, the Sea of Milk — was constructed in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, and its balustraded promenade remains the calm centre of the city. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Maligawa, stands within the royal palace precinct on the lake's southern bank. Built across successive reigns of the Kandyan period, it enshrines what is venerated as a tooth relic of Gautama Buddha, housed within seven nested golden caskets in the inner shrine room. The temple's white-washed walls, red-tiled roofs, carved wooden pillars, and painted passageways reward a slow walk through.

The return journey to Colombo includes a dinner stop at Ambepussa, at a restaurant of your choice, before the tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel. Comfortable walking shoes are advisable given the amount of ground covered on foot. When visiting the Temple of the Tooth, head coverings of any kind — caps, hats, or otherwise — may not be worn above the neck; the tour notes make this clear in advance. Photography stops along the route can be arranged where parking is practical. Travel times are subject to road traffic, which can vary considerably on the Colombo–Kandy corridor.
