A Sinhala novel by W. A. Silva, and one of the titles of his that was later adapted for the cinema. The text is in Sinhala throughout — there is no English translation or parallel text here — so this edition is for readers who read Sinhala comfortably. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should note that before ordering.
W. A. Silva was born in Wellawatte, Colombo, and wrote fiction in Sinhala from his teens onwards, beginning with the novel Siriyalatha. Alongside his fiction he worked as an editor, running the magazines Siri Sara and Nuwana and the weekly Lanka Samaya. His standing in Colombo is marked in the city itself: a street in Wellawatte carries his name, and Silvermere, the house he lived in, is now a museum.
Silva belongs to the generation of Sinhala novelists whose work moved from the page to the screen, and Hingana Kolla — the title is also transliterated Higana Kolla — is among the novels of his that reached a film audience. That double life, as a book read in Sinhala households and as a story known to cinemagoers, is part of why the title has stayed in print.
This is a Sarasavi edition. It will suit readers building a shelf of early Sinhala fiction, students of the Sinhala novel, and Sri Lankan families abroad wanting their own copies of books they first met at home or at school. For anyone reading Silva for the first time, it is a straightforward way in to a writer whose name remains familiar in Colombo.
