This is a Sinhala-language book, set in Sinhala script throughout. Anyone ordering from outside Sri Lanka should be clear on that point before buying: it is not an English text and not a bilingual edition, and reading it requires Sinhala.
The author, Welivitiye Sorata Thera — also transliterated Waliwitiye Soratha — was a Buddhist monk and Sinhala scholar whose name is attached to the Sri Sumangala Shabdakoshaya, the Sinhala-Sinhala dictionary he compiled. That dictionary was first published by the Maha Bodhi Press in Colombo and was later reissued by S. Godage and Brothers. It is the work for which his name is most often encountered in Sri Lankan libraries and catalogues, and it places him squarely among the monastic scholars who did the groundwork on the Sinhala language in the twentieth century.
The present volume comes from Godage International Publishers, the Colombo house that publishes in Sinhala and in English and that keeps a long list of Sinhala scholarly and literary titles in circulation. Much of what it issues has a readership among students, teachers and researchers working in Sinhala rather than a general trade audience, and that is the shelf this book sits on.
Of interest chiefly to readers of Sinhala with a serious interest in the language and in the work of its traditional scholars, and to libraries building Sinhala-language collections abroad.
