Cloves are the dried, unopened, nail-shaped flower buds of the evergreen Syzygium aromaticum. They are reddish-brown in color and have a strong, aromatic flavor and aroma. Cloves come from Madagascar, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Though they have a strong flavor and should be used in small amounts to not overpower other flavors, cloves are a great addition to both sweet and savory dishes.
