Head out from Colombo in a private, air-conditioned vehicle and travel roughly 100 kilometres to Ratnapura — Sri Lanka's gem capital. Your English-speaking driver doubles as a knowledgeable guide along the way, pointing out the landscape as the city gives way to lush lowland hills. Once in Ratnapura, step inside the Gem Museum to see sapphires, rubies, and amethysts up close alongside the cutting tools and mining methods that shape the industry. Afterwards, visit an active gem mine and watch workers sift through gravel in search of precious stones. The full excursion runs seven hours, door to door, with hotel pickup and drop-off included.
