Question 1

Where is Hanguranketha Raja Maha Viharaya located?

Accepted Answer

The temple is located in Hanguranketha, a small highland town in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka, approximately 35 kilometres from Kandy. The valley sits at a moderate elevation and is surrounded by tea-growing hillsides and paddy fields.

Question 2

Is Hanguranketha Raja Maha Viharaya open to tourists?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the temple is open to visitors throughout the year. As an active place of worship, it receives both pilgrims and tourists. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required, and footwear must be removed before entering the shrine areas.

Question 3

What makes Hanguranketha a Raja Maha Viharaya?

Accepted Answer

The designation Raja Maha Viharaya indicates that a temple historically received royal patronage and holds a recognised senior status within the Sri Lankan Buddhist ecclesiastical hierarchy. Hanguranketha's temple gained this standing during the era of the Kandyan Kingdom, when the highland interior was the seat of royal authority.

Question 4

How long does a visit to Hanguranketha Raja Maha Viharaya take?

Accepted Answer

Most visitors spend between 30 minutes and an hour at the temple complex itself. Combined with the scenic drive from Kandy and any time spent in Hanguranketha town, the outing makes a comfortable half-day excursion.

Question 5

Can I combine Hanguranketha with a visit to Horton Plains?

Accepted Answer

A combined visit is possible but requires an early start, as Horton Plains is best experienced in the morning before cloud cover builds. It is advisable to arrange a private vehicle and plan the route in advance. The drive between the two sites passes through attractive highland scenery.

Question 6

What are Poya days and should I visit on one?

Accepted Answer

Poya days are Sri Lankan public holidays that fall on each full moon, observed as major Buddhist religious occasions. Visiting on a Poya day gives the most immersive sense of temple life, with devotees gathering for prayer and offering. However, the compound will be busier than on regular days.

Question 7

Is there public transport to Hanguranketha from Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Bus services do run between Kandy and Hanguranketha, though schedules can be infrequent and journey times vary. Travellers who prefer greater flexibility and comfort typically hire a private vehicle or driver, which also allows stops at other sites along the route.
