Question 1

What is Alocasia cucullata used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Alocasia cucullata is used in preparations associated with pain relief, inflammation, and certain skin conditions. Different parts of the plant — including the corm, roots, and leaves — are used in various formulations, typically after processing to neutralise the raw plant's irritant compounds. Traditional use reflects historical practice and should not replace advice from a qualified medical professional.

Question 2

Is Alocasia cucullata found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Alocasia cucullata grows naturally in Sri Lanka, particularly in moist, shaded habitats in the wet zone. It is also widely cultivated in home gardens and temple grounds across the island. Its native range extends across tropical and subtropical Asia, from southern China through Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Question 3

Is Alocasia cucullata poisonous?

Accepted Answer

Like most plants in the Araceae family, Alocasia cucullata contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the skin, mouth, and throat if the raw plant is handled excessively or ingested without preparation. It is not toxic in the same way as some other plants, but raw consumption is not recommended. Traditional ayurvedic use involves processing the plant — cooking, drying, or other methods — before any internal application.

Question 4

What does Alocasia cucullata look like?

Accepted Answer

Alocasia cucullata is a compact tropical herb growing typically between 60 centimetres and one metre tall. It has large, glossy, deep-green heart-shaped leaves with a distinctive hooded or concave tip, pale prominent veins, and a lighter underside. The plant spreads through underground corms and can occasionally produce a pale spathe and spadix inflorescence.

Question 5

Where can I see medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy is one of the best places to observe Sri Lanka's medicinal and endemic flora in a curated setting. Village herb gardens, ayurvedic wellness centres in the hill country, and forest walks in the wet zone also offer opportunities to encounter plants like Alocasia cucullata in their natural context.

Question 6

What family does Alocasia cucullata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Alocasia cucullata belongs to the family Araceae, a large family of flowering plants that includes well-known species such as taro (Colocasia esculenta), peace lilies, and anthuriums. The genus Alocasia encompasses around 90 species distributed across tropical and subtropical Asia, several of which have traditional medicinal or culinary uses.

Question 7

Is Alocasia cucullata the same as Chinese taro?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Alocasia cucullata is commonly referred to as Chinese taro or hooded dwarf elephant ear in English. These common names reflect both its widespread cultivation in China and the distinctive hooded shape of its leaf tip. It is not the same species as the culinary taro (Colocasia esculenta), which belongs to a different genus within the same family.
