Snorkelling from Hikkaduwa is a two-hour guided session in the shallow coral gardens that lie directly off one of Sri Lanka's most accessible reef stretches. The experience is run from the Diving Center in Hikkaduwa, and all snorkelling equipment is provided, so there is nothing to organise beyond turning up. A short boat ride brings participants out to the best snorkelling spot on the reef, putting the coral close beneath the surface and the water clear enough to see the seabed in detail.
The reef itself sits within Hikkaduwa National Park, a government-protected marine area whose history as Sri Lanka's first official marine sanctuary dates to 1979. The coral formations here include a range of growth forms — massive colonies, branching structures, encrusting sheets and plate-like spreads — at depths that keep everything well within view of a snorkel mask. The wildlife that comes with them is varied: schools of small fish moving together in the mid-water, clownfish among their anemones, hermit crabs working the reef floor, and the possibility, on any given outing, of encountering a hawksbill or green sea turtle. The reef has seen pressure over the years, including coral bleaching, but it has also recovered substantially and continues to support well over a hundred and fifty species of reef fish alongside dozens of coral species.
The session starts at eight in the morning, and the early start is deliberate. Underwater visibility is at its clearest in the first hours of the day, and the reef's residents are more active before the sun climbs and drives them into shaded crevices. The southwest coast, where Hikkaduwa sits, is generally at its calmest between November and April, when sea conditions and visibility are most reliable. Other start times can be arranged if the eight o'clock departure does not suit, though participants should expect conditions to be less ideal later in the day.
If you carry an underwater camera or a pole mount, the reef offers plenty of subjects: the corals themselves in orange, yellow and green, schools of fish catching the light, and the occasional larger resident resting on the substrate. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are not included, and gratuities are at the participant's discretion. The experience is near public transport links in Hikkaduwa. It is not suitable for those with back problems, serious medical conditions, or expectant mothers, and it is not wheelchair accessible. Infants need to sit on laps during the boat transfer.
