This is a Sinhala-script edition of the Maha Pirith Pota, the collection of protective recitations — paritta — most widely used in Sri Lanka. International buyers should note that the text is in Sinhala throughout, with the recitations themselves in Pali rendered in Sinhala characters, as is standard practice on the island. There is no English in it.
The collection is also known as the Catubhanavara Pali, the Text of the Four Recitals. It gathers discourses almost all attributed to the Buddha and drawn from the Sutta Pitaka, among them the Mangala Sutta, the Ratana Sutta and the Karaniya Metta Sutta, which are the ones heard most often at pirith ceremonies and in daily household chanting. A copy of the Pirith Pota is a common presence in Sri Lankan homes, and children are generally taught the recitations from one.
What distinguishes this particular edition is announced in its title: loku akuru sahitha, printed in large letters. That makes it a practical choice for anyone reciting aloud for a long sitting, for older readers, and for households where the book is shared or read in poor light. The edition is credited to Shasthracharya M. Wimalatissa Thera and comes from Godage International Publishers, an established Colombo house publishing in Sinhala and English.
It will suit Sri Lankan families abroad who want a recitation copy in the home, students of Pali and Theravada liturgy who read Sinhala script, and anyone learning the chants by ear who needs to follow the text on the page. Readers with no Sinhala will not be able to use it.
