Question 1

What is a monastic complex in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

A monastic complex is a self-contained Buddhist community of shrines, meditation halls, refectories, and monks' quarters. In Sri Lanka they are called vihara or arama and range from small forest hermitages to vast royal monasteries covering hundreds of hectares. Most were founded between the third century BCE and the twelfth century CE and many remain active places of worship today.

Question 2

Where are the best monastic ruins in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The greatest concentrations are in the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in the north-central province, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Abhayagiri and Jetavanaramaya complexes in Anuradhapura and the Alahana Pirivena in Polonnaruwa are generally considered the most impressive. More remote but rewarding sites include Ritigala and Medirigiriya.

Question 3

Do I need a guide to visit Sri Lanka's ancient monasteries?

Accepted Answer

A guide is not strictly required at the main sites, which have information boards and maps. However, for forest monasteries like Ritigala the terrain can be disorienting, and an archaeologically knowledgeable guide adds enormous interpretive value at any site. Guides can be arranged through your DMC or hired at the entrance to major heritage zones.

Question 4

What should I wear when visiting Buddhist monastic sites in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cover your shoulders and legs — long trousers or a sarong and a top that covers the arms are appropriate. Remove shoes and any headwear before entering shrine buildings or climbing stupa platforms. White clothing is common among local worshippers on poya days and shows respect, though it is not required of tourists.

Question 5

Are the ancient monastic complexes open every day?

Accepted Answer

Most of the major archaeological sites within Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are open daily, typically from early morning until evening. Admission fees apply and are collected at the archaeological zone entrances. Smaller or more remote sites may have variable access — contacting the Central Cultural Fund or your tour operator before visiting is recommended.

Question 6

What is the difference between a vihara and a dagoba?

Accepted Answer

A vihara (or arama) is the complete monastic complex — the monks' community with all its buildings and grounds. A dagoba (stupa) is a specific dome-shaped monument within that complex that enshrines sacred relics. Most monastic complexes contain at least one dagoba, but the dagoba is one component of the larger vihara, not a synonym for it.

Question 7

Can I visit active monastic complexes in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many working monasteries across Sri Lanka welcome respectful visitors. Active sites operate alongside archaeological ruins, particularly in Anuradhapura. Visitors should follow posted guidelines, keep noise low, and avoid entering monks' residential quarters without an invitation. Forest monasteries may have restricted visiting hours tied to the monks' meditation schedule.
