Jetwing Sea

Negombo, Sri Lanka

Jetwing Sea is a contemporary 84-room beach hotel on Porutota Road in Negombo, about 9 kilometres in a straight line from Colombo's international airport. It grew out of Jetwing Seashells, opened on this beach in 1978, and today every room on its four floors looks towards the Indian Ocean, with two swimming pools and a rooftop spa above Negombo Beach.

Which room should I book?

Every room has air conditioning, a rain shower, a satellite television, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, a tea and coffee tray and a safe. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.

  • Deluxe – one of 53 Deluxe Rooms, each 50.7 square metres with an ocean view, a sitting area and a spacious private balcony. The bathroom has a separate rain shower and a bathtub from which you can see the sea. Baby cots are available on request.
  • Suite – the Suites are on the fourth floor, at 80.9 square metres, with panoramic views high above the ocean, a king-size four-poster bed, a large sitting area and a bathroom with a rain shower and a Jacuzzi bathtub facing the sea. Baby cots are available on request.
  • Sea Residence – a single, one-of-a-kind suite at the top of the hotel, 130 square metres with two lounge areas, a dining area with a kitchenette (microwave, stovetop, fridge and cookware), a king-size bed with a view of the sea, two televisions, a freestanding bathtub and rain shower, and both a sea-view balcony and a furnished terrace.

Jetwing describes each of these for two adults. Bookings with us can take up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children, in the Deluxe rooms and Suites; the Sea Residence is for adults only. Tell us who is travelling so the hotel can prepare the right bedding.

Where can I eat and drink?

The Horizon is the main restaurant, set beside the pool with a view across the ocean and open for all-day dining from a menu of world cuisines. Seaside Social, the beachfront lounge and bar, is open from mid-morning until midnight for sharing plates, cocktails, coffee and pastries. For a special evening, Jetwing offers two signature dining experiences: Sea Romance, a candlelit dinner under the stars, and the Beach Canopy, a private table on the sand. There is also a wine cellar and 24-hour room service.

What is there to do at the hotel?

There are two swimming pools, a fully equipped gym and a beach volleyball court on the sand. The Sky Spa on the roof has treatment rooms overlooking the sea and uses natural ingredients in its therapies. The hotel also has a conference hall for up to 60 people, hotel taxis, a left-luggage service, laundry and a doctor on call, which makes it a practical first or last night of a trip.

What is nearby?

Negombo is known as Little Rome for its many churches, among them St Sebastian's Church, and the town keeps a Dutch fort from colonial times. You can see the day's catch landed at the Lellama fish market at the northern end of the Negombo Lagoon, a tour Jetwing arranges. Boat trips along the old Dutch Hamilton Canal lead to the Muthurajawela mangroves, and the Anawilundawa sanctuary further north is good for birdwatching. Jetwing also runs a hands-on Meegama Treacle Trail, making traditional sweets from coconut treacle with a village cook.

How do I get from the airport to Jetwing Sea?

The hotel is close to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 9 kilometres away in a straight line, so you can be on the beach soon after landing. Colombo is about 44 kilometres away, roughly 45 minutes on the expressway according to Jetwing. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Sea, which takes you all the way to the door. By train, Kattuwa station on the Puttalam Line is about 1.4 kilometres away.

Who is Jetwing Sea best suited to?

It suits travellers who want a comfortable beach hotel close to the airport for the start or end of a holiday, families who will use the two pools, and couples looking for a sea-view suite.
