Villa Hibiscus, Weligama, Sri Lanka

Tucked into one acre of private tropical gardens on Sri Lanka's south coast, Villa Hibiscus is a beachfront hideaway where the lawns fade gently down to a deserted beach and the Indian Ocean. Approximately one kilometre from Weligama town, the property sits in a traffic-free location well beyond the well-worn west coast tourist trail — a genuinely secluded retreat suited to rest, creative pursuits, yoga, meditation, honeymoon escapes, and rejuvenation.

The single-storey plantation villa comfortably sleeps six guests across three double bedrooms. Two rooms are fully air-conditioned and one is naturally ventilated with a mosquito net; all three are fitted with ceiling fans and dressed in best-quality linen. The setting rewards those who simply want to pause: sunsets viewed from the terrace are, by any measure, remarkable.

The Beach and Gardens

The bay offers perfectly safe bathing, and the colourful tropical reef that surrounds it makes for excellent snorkelling. The gardens themselves are alive with a diversity of wildlife — monkeys, iguanas, mongoose, and squirrels move through the grounds, while parrots and kingfishers are among the birds regularly spotted around the property.

Dining at the Villa

All meals are cooked to order and draw on a variety of fresh fish and fruit, or guests may opt for traditional Sri Lankan dishes served al fresco on the terrace. The English-speaking manager is on hand to discuss and arrange orders. Guests may choose to shop for ingredients themselves at Weligama market, or leave the task to the villa's cook, whose services are included in the rental cost.

Excursions and Day Trips

Villa Hibiscus sits at the southern edge of Sri Lanka, some 144 km (89.5 miles) from Colombo, between Galle and Weligama. That position makes it a practical base for a wide range of excursions.

• Yala National Park — private tours can be arranged directly from the villa, offering the chance to see elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife.
• The Hill Country — a two-or-more-day excursion taking in the elephant orphanage, tea and rubber plantations, and the temples of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Tea and chocolate cake at Ella Gap comes particularly recommended, and on a clear day the view stretches all the way down to the coast.
• Galle — the nearest town for shopping, 24 km (15 miles) from the villa, with its beautiful old Fort a highlight for any visitor.
• Matara and Dondara — famous temples in Matara and the striking blowhole at Dondara are within reach for a day trip.
• Ratnapura — further afield, the gem mines of Ratnapura offer a fascinating excursion.
• Local alternatives — on rougher sea days, a visit to the snake farm or the turtle conservation farm can be arranged; a gentle walk around Weligama itself is equally charming and well worth the time.
